The city of Grenada, Spain has a long history with pomegranates, with the fruit having been cultivated in the region for centuries. And is the name sake of the city, the word Granada translates to pomegranate in Spanish. The pomegranate is an important symbol in Grenada and is featured prominently in many of the city’s artistic traditions.

King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella chose the fruit as a symbol of their final victory over the Moors of Al-Andalus, which took place in Granada. Since then, the pomegranate has remained part the country’s identity and can even bee seen on the Spanish flag today.

Grenada was conquered by the Moors in the 8th century, and it is believed that the pomegranate was introduced to the region by these Arab invaders. The fruit was highly prized for its medicinal properties and was used to treat a wide range of ailments. It was also used as a symbol of prosperity and fertility, and it was often depicted in art and literature as a symbol of abundance and prosperity.

As the city of Grenada grew and developed over the centuries, the pomegranate became an integral part of its culture and identity. The fruit was featured prominently in local cuisine, with dishes such as pomegranate-stuffed lamb and pomegranate-infused pastries becoming popular. Pomegranate groves could be found throughout the region, and the fruit was an important part of the local economy.

A fun time of year to visit Grenada is during pomegranate harvest. Pomegranate season is at its peak in late fall and throughout winter, usually from the months of September to November. Many shop and local will se up temporary stalls selling the fruit.

The pomegranate is still an important part of Grenada’s culture and identity. Pomegranates are also featured in many of the city’s cultural and artistic traditions, including in its architecture, art, and literature.

While walking through Granada the sharp eyes tourist can spot hundred of artistic references to the fruit in mosaics, carvings, reliefs and tiny hidden art pieces around the city.

While tourists flock to the well-known trails of Mount Rainier and Olympic National Park, there are plenty of hidden gems within our own state that only locals seem to know.

1. Bunkers del Carmel: Located on the hill of El Carmel, these bunkers offer some of the best views of the city. They’re a bit off the beaten path, so you’ll likely have the place to yourself. The views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea are simply breathtaking.
2. Jardins del Laberint d’Horta: This beautiful garden is located in the Horta neighborhood, and it’s filled with winding paths, hidden corners, and beautiful sculptures. It’s the perfect spot to snap some pictures of nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
3. Passeig de Sant Joan: This wide boulevard is located in the Eixample neighborhood and it’s filled with stunning Art Nouveau buildings. Take a stroll down the street to snap some pictures of the beautiful facades and stop for a coffee at one of the many outdoor cafes.

As I walked through the winding streets of Barcelona, I couldn’t help but feel drawn to the ornate and imaginative architecture that seemed to be around every corner. Most of the cities magical art scene centers around the works of Antoni Gaudí an amazing and innovative artist that worked over 100 years ago. One of my favorite sites was the colorful CASA BATLLÓ.

Gaudí, a Catalan architect and designer, is known for his unique and eclectic style, which is heavily influenced by nature and the Catalan culture. His most famous works can be found throughout in Barcelona, and as I explored each one, I felt like I was uncovering a secret world of his imagination and wonder.

My first stop was the Sagrada Família, a towering basilica that has been under construction for over 100 years. As I walked around the outside of the building, I was struck by the intricate details and organic shapes that seemed to come to life in the stone. The façade was covered in intricate carvings of animals, plants, and figures, all inspired by Gaudí’s love of nature.

I made my way to Park Güell, a public park that is filled with colorful mosaics, sculptures, and buildings. I was struck by the way that Gaudí had used natural forms and motifs to create something truly unique. The park was a veritable wonderland, filled with twisted columns, curved walls, and mosaics that seemed to shimmer in the sunlight. There is a Museum in the Park as well.

While exploring the city, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the creativity and imagination of Gaudí. His works seemed to challenge the boundaries of traditional architecture and invite the viewer to see the world in a new way.

My journey to discover the secrets of Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona was a true delight. Each of his works was a testament to his creativity and dedication to his craft, and I left the city feeling inspired and awestruck.
