The Great Wall of China is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting China. Stretching over 13,000 miles, this ancient fortification has protected the country from invaders for centuries and is now a popular tourist destination.

I booked my trip through for hiking the wall with Beijing Hikers. They picked me up from my hotel, provided water, an awesome guide, and took me back after the hike. I totally recommend them!

Here are some tips to make the most of your visit to the Great Wall:

  1. Choose the right section: The Great Wall is a very long structure, and there are many different sections to visit. Consider your interests and how much time you have to spend at the wall when choosing which section to visit.
  2. Go at the right time of year: Depending on your preference, the best time to visit the Great Wall may vary. Summer can be hot and humid, but the wall is more crowded during this time. Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, but the wall may be covered in fog or smog. Winter can be cold and icy, but the wall is less crowded and can offer beautiful snowy views.
  3. Wear comfortable shoes: The Great Wall is a very long structure, and you will be walking on uneven and sometimes steep terrain. Wear comfortable shoes that provide good support and are appropriate for the weather.
  4. Bring water and snacks: There are no food or drink vendors on the Great Wall, so make sure to bring enough water and snacks to sustain you during your visit.
  5. Take your time: The Great Wall is a very long structure, and you don’t have to see it all in one day. Consider spending a full day or even multiple days exploring different sections of the wall. This will allow you to take breaks and take in the beauty of the wall at a more leisurely pace.
  6. Respect the wall: The Great Wall is a very important cultural and historical site, so it is important to respect it. Do not climb on the wall or deface it in any way.
